Rep. Adam Smith, who has been serving in the U.S. Congress representing Washington’s 9th District since 1997, recently took to social media to address several pressing issues concerning the actions and policies of former President Donald Trump. In a series of tweets, Smith expressed his views on matters including disaster recovery efforts, social security, and immigration policy.
On April 14, 2025, Smith addressed the impact of a severe storm that struck Washington state, stating, "Our state faced the biggest storm in 19 years with November's bomb cyclone, with hundreds of thousands of Washingtonians losing electricity and two people losing their lives. Yet, the President refuses to help cover the $34 million in damage. Donald Trump needs to keep FEMA". Smith criticized Trump's administration for not providing federal assistance through FEMA to cover the extensive damages incurred by the storm.
Continuing his critique on April 15, 2025, Smith highlighted issues regarding social security and employment, stating, "Elon Musk and Donald Trump are taking your Social Security to pay for billionaire tax cuts. From dismantling the Seattle office to laying off 7,000 federal workers, seniors are facing higher wait times and an increased backlog, making access to their benefits even harder". The tweet pointed out perceived threats to social security and the federal workforce resulting from tax policies favoring billionaires.
Later on April 15, 2025, Smith addressed Trump’s immigration policies, asserting that "What Donald Trump is doing on immigration is wrong. He is violating constitutional rights and terrorizing those who have a legal right to be in our country". This statement underscored Smith's objection to what he described as violations of constitutional rights under Trump's immigration policies.
