On April 14, 2025, Smith expressed concern about school children facing hunger due to funding cuts for school meal programs, attributed to former President Trump's team. He highlighted this issue during a town hall meeting hosted by the local group, Feeding Feasible Feasts, with a focus on community engagement and solutions. “Children are not going to get an education because they're going to school hungry," Smith stated.
