On March 11, 2025, Rep. Smith welcomed members of the Ninth District to Washington D.C., expressing his pleasure at hosting Mayor Ferrell and other officials from Federal Way in his office. He mentioned that their discussions focused on initiatives to enhance their city further. "It’s always great to have members of the Ninth District in D.C., so I was happy to welcome @WAFederalWay Mayor Ferrell, councilmembers and government officials to my office to discuss making their city even better."

Later that day, Rep. Smith voiced concerns over the detention of Mahmoud Khalil, describing it as a significant infringement on free speech rights. While he acknowledged the importance of addressing protests that involve threats or criminal acts, he emphasized that Khalil had not committed any crime and should not be imprisoned for his expression. "The detention of Mahmoud Khalil is a deeply troubling attack on free speech... But Khalil committed no crime."

In another post dated March 11, 2025, Rep. Smith expressed frustration regarding Seattle's professional sports teams' financial strategies. He critiqued recent decisions concerning team rosters and highlighted the need for investment in key positions such as offensive line players and wide receivers. "Could Seattle fans have at least one pro team willing to spend $ to get better? We swapped one frustrating, goodish QB for another... And we will need more than one WR."
