On March 5, 2025, Rep. Adam Smith commemorated the 60th anniversary of the Selma marchers' attack in Alabama by highlighting its significance for current voting rights issues. He stated, "Friday marks 60 years since hundreds of marchers were attacked in Selma, Alabama while demonstrating for the right to vote. Today, the fight for voting rights is just as urgent. That's why House Democrats are introducing the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act."
