Rep. Adam Smith, a longstanding member of the U.S. Congress representing Washington's 9th district since 1997, has recently shared his views on social media regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies in the United States. His remarks were made on January 26, 2025.
In one post, Rep. Smith expressed concern over efforts to address bigotry and equity being undermined by political attacks. He emphasized the importance of acknowledging both realities of DEI implementation, stating: "Blocking Trump’s attacks on efforts to deal with bigotry and equity will only work if we acknowledge this second reality. Can’t get there just harping on the first. Mend it, don’t end it. Don’t ignore all the ways DEI has been misapplied."
In another tweet posted at the same time, Rep. Smith criticized how DEI has been implemented in various parts of the country. He remarked that its current form often promotes a "radical agenda" that diverges from objectivity and excellence: "Two, the way DEI has been implemented in this country in far too many places goes way beyond this. It pushes a radical agenda with a narrow world view and moves us away from objectivity and the promotion of excellence."
Later that day, Rep. Smith extended an invitation for constituents to reach out to his office for assistance with issues such as Social Security benefits or immigration cases: "My office is here to help, listen and reply to your concerns. From Social Security benefits to immigration cases, contact my office for assistance."
