March 14th, the City Council had its regular monthly meeting. Here are the meeting highlights.

•  The City Council heard a presentation on King County’s Zero Waste Re+ program. This program is intended to reinvent the region’s waste system to cut carbon emissions and transition to a sustainable economy. The agenda packet includes the King County presentation and the Re+ Strategic Plan.
• The City Council agreed that Study Sessions will be held on the 4th Tuesdays starting at 7:00 pm. The purpose of the meeting would be to discuss items/issues without having the requirement (or pressure) to act. The next Study Session is planned for March 28th and is open to the public.
• Certain road variances were approved. During the final design of our Walker and Sequoia Creek Culvert replacement projects, our engineering consultants have identified five road variances recommended to complete the projects. Without these variances, design and construction costs would increase or make construction infeasible.
• A proclamation declaring April 2, 2023, as Education and Sharing Day was approved. In 1978, the U.S. Congress asked President Jimmy Carter to designate the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson’s birthday, as national Education and Sharing Day to recognize and pay tribute to his efforts for better education for all American citizens. The Rebbe advocated for children and spoke about the need for each child to be given an education that would offer them opportunities to succeed. To honor these accomplishments, “Education & Sharing Day” is observed each year on the Rebbe’s birthday in recognition of his outstanding and lasting contributions toward the improvement of education, morality, and acts of charity around the world.

Coffee with the Mayor

On Friday, March 31st, from 9:00 am to 10:30 am, you can join Mayor Sue-Ann Hohimer and city staff at Empire Coffee at the Normandy Park Towne Center. This is an excellent opportunity for community members to meet with City representatives and ask questions or discuss City services. In addition, we will also have guests from the Des Moines Activity Center available to answer questions and share more about their programs. We hope to see you there.

2nd Annual Arbor Day Celebration is Coming in April

Mark your calendar for Saturday, April 29th. This is the date of the second Annual Arbor Day Celebration at Marvista Park. More details to come, but it is guaranteed to be a fun and informative event for all!
