2022 Overlay Project begins construction Wednesday

Construction begins on the 2022 Overlay Project Wednesday, July 20.

City Council approved the contracts for this project in June. This project proposes resurfacing roughly one  mile of pavement along the South 188th Street corridor between  International Boulevard and the intersection of Des Moines Memorial  Drive South, including the 188th Street tunnel that runs beneath the  south end of the Airport runway.

In addition to repaving the roadway, a landscaped median will be  constructed down the center of South 188th Street between 16th Avenue  South and the west end of the tunnel to increase safety to the traveling  public by separating eastbound and westbound traffic.

The landscaped median will also improve the overall aesthetics of the  roadway corridor. Lastly, a new modular stormwater treatment structure  will be installed to better treat stormwater runoff from the roadway.

South 188th Street will be reduced to a single lane of  traffic in both the eastbound and westbound directions. Construction of  the new landscaped median and the stormwater treatment facility will  occur during the day, whereas, grinding and paving of the roadway  surface will occur at night.

For work that occurs during daylight hours, these traffic changes  will be in effect daily between 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Night work to  occur between the hours of 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. No traffic detours are  planned for day or night work.

Traffic delays as a result of construction should be anticipated and drivers should plan accordingly when traveling South 188th Street.  Alternate travel routes are recommended.

Construction will continue throughout the summer, but not on Labor  Day. The construction contract totals $1,757,315. All funding is local.
