Bellevue School District issued the following announcement.
The pandemic has taken a significant toll on our students’ mental health. Many are coping with stress at home and simultaneously worrying about the future. The sense of uncertainty created by the pandemic has naturally led to feelings of increased anxiety and fear for many of us. Students are especially susceptible because their worldview and sense of well-being are shaped by routine. When the routine is upset – by learning moving to a remote setting and an interruption of sports, activities, community service and other projects – this can throw a student’s mental well-being off.
Stress and anxiety caused by the pandemic may bring about new mental health concerns for students who have not needed support before. It may also exacerbate problems for students who are already in need of support. Often, educators, school administrators, counselors and other staff are the first to identify students struggling with mental health. Remote learning has made it more challenging to identify signs and signals.
