City of Kirkland issued the following announcement on Aug. 27.
This fall, the Kirkland community can recycle many difficult-to-recycle items at special events designed to limit the risk of exposure to COVID-19.
The City of Kirkland is hosting Safer Recycling Events for Styrofoam™, plastic film, batteries, shredding, electronics, CRTs, and more. StyroFest plastic foam and film recycling events are resuming under the safer event guidelines, with shortened hours and new locations.
Safer Fall Recycling Event Schedule
• September 12 – Safer StyroFest
• September 19 – Electronics, CRTs, Batteries, and Confidential Shredding
• October 10 – Fall Recycling Collection Event
• November 7 – Safer StyroFest
• November 14 – Battery Recycling and Confidential Shredding
• December 5 – Safer StyroFest
“It was important to the City to be able to help enable people to do the right thing for our planet, while staying safe and preventing the spread of COVID-19,” said Deputy Mayor Jay Arnold. “The City Council encourages you to put on your mask and take advantage of these great recycling opportunities.”

Attendees must wear face coverings to protect staff working at the events and prevent spread of COVID-19 in the community. Anyone who feels sick should not attend. Attendees are asked to remain in their vehicles until it is their turn to unload; at some events, staff may remove items from trunks while attendees remain in their cars. Vendor staff also self-screen for symptoms in advance of the event. The City successfully hosted six Safer Summer Recycling Events following the same protocol.
Events are open to Kirkland businesses and anyone who lives in Kirkland. Pass-through fees apply to some items at our Fall Recycling Collection Event; all other events are free. Because of the changing nature of the pandemic, events may be subject to change or cancellation. Updates will be posted on the City’s website if necessary.
City facilities remain closed to the public. Recycling drop-off points located inside City Hall, the community centers, and the Public Works Maintenance Center are not accepting materials for recycling (batteries, smoke detectors, and CFL bulbs). The public is asked to bring materials to events and other drop-off locations, keep materials until facilities reopen, or contact the Recycling Hotline for other options. Due to safety considerations, the Recycling Team will not be hosting a Halloween Costume Swap this year.
