City of Des Moines issued the following announcement on May 19.
The City of Des Moines Recognizes Police Week and Peace Officer Memorial Day
The City of Des Moines is joining in honoring police officers today as part of Peace Officer Memorial Day. In 1962 Congress approved and President John F. Kennedy signed legislation making every May 15th Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week surrounding it as Police Week across the country. The US Flag at City Hall is flying at half-staff today to honor the many sacrifices made by Peace Officers and their families in support of public safety.
Des Moines Mayor Matt Pina noted, “We, in Des Moines are fortunate to have an outstanding Police Chief and police force who work tirelessly to protect the public 24/7. We appreciate them every day but take this opportunity here on national Police Week and Peace Officer Memorial Day to publicly recognize their vigilance in protecting our Des Moines community.” The Des Moines Police Department is led by Chief Ken Thomas.
Des Moines City Manager Michael Matthias added, “This pandemic has focused everyone’s attention on the paramount importance of public safety and health. We are grateful to have such excellent leadership and such dedicated officers and staff in our Police Department keeping our community safe.”
