Rep. Adam Smith, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Washington’s 9th district, shared reflections and initiatives on April 21, 2025, through several social media updates. Smith, who replaced Randy Tate in 1997 and has since made contributions in the U.S. Congress, has previously served in the Washington State Senate from 1991 to 1997. Born in Washington, D.C. in 1965, Smith continues to reside in Bellevue and holds academic degrees from Fordham University and the University of Washington.
On April 21, 2025, Smith expressed condolences and commemorated the life of Pope Francis. In his statement, Smith noted "Pope Francis lived a life of grace that will pave the way for a more accepting society. His leadership, care for the less fortunate, and commitment towards inclusion will be remembered. May he rest in peace."
Later that day, Rep. Smith highlighted a legislative endeavor by announcing his support for restoring funding to the Citizenship & Assimilation grant program. Through a public post, Smith declared, "I signed onto a letter demanding Acting Director Scott restores funding for the Citizenship & Assimilation grant program, which helps low-income immigrants apply and prepare to become U.S. citizens. According to USCIS, 23,500 people in Washington became naturalized in the last year."
Smith also addressed the implications of proposed budget cuts by House Republicans, particularly concerning the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Expressing concern over these developments, Smith stated, "House Republicans' recent budget resolution cuts SNAP benefits. SNAP helps more than 42 million Americans, including 42,083 households in our district, get fed every month. Not only does it put food on the table, but it creates over 45,0000 jobs."
