WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.) today issued the following statement on the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade and eliminated the constitutional right to abortion.

“Today marks the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s radical ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which broke from over 50 years of precedent and stripped millions of their reproductive rights. The restrictive abortion laws resulting from this ruling have had a devastating impact across the country. Doctors are afraid to perform health care procedures. Patients are being denied care in emergency rooms. Families are traveling hundreds of miles for necessary care. It is not an exaggeration to say that more lives are in danger because of this ruling.

“The overturning of Roe was not the end of Republican efforts to restrict abortion access. This year alone, Republican elected officials have introduced more than 350 bills to restrict abortion in states across the country and in Congress House Republicans have proposed three national abortion bans.

“We must use every tool at our disposal to ensure access to reproductive health care is enshrined into law, which is why I have signed a discharge petition with my democratic colleagues to bring the Women’s Health Protection Act to the floor for a vote. This important bill would codify into law the right to an abortion for every person regardless of income or zip code. We must have the courage and commitment to stand up for reproductive freedom so that all Americans have the full autonomy over their bodies and futures.”
