The City continues to work on streetscape initiatives, designed to improve the quality of local streets and the visual effect they have on the public.
In a presentation provided to City Council, Public Works Director Will Appleton discussed some of the aspects of streetscape– a term that describes the natural and built fabric of a street. The concept recognizes that a street is a public place where people should be able to engage in various activities.
Some elements of streetscaping include sidewalks, planters, seating, public art and lighting. Initiatives implemented from this include the City’s Airport Station Pedestrian Improvement Project, the City Center Plan and the City’s lighting policy. Last year the city implemented the new lighting policy, which provides aesthetic rules and guidelines for street and pedestrian lighting on city right-of-way.
The Airport Pedestrian Improvement Project includes a new color palette for the city incorporating a salmon pink and light green to represent the City’s commitment to local urban forests. The project will incorporate streetscape elements identified in the Urban Design Report, like planter boxes and benches.
New guidelines for street cross sections include safety measures for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers through ensuring landscaping, maintaining wide sidewalks and incorporating bike lanes.
Lastly, the City will be updating its signs (the ones that say ‘welcome to SeaTac’) and others marking the City’s boundaries.
