The Port of Seattle and the Federal Aviation Administration have determined that additional time is needed to complete the analysis necessary to meet National Environmental Policy Act requirements before the Sustainable Airport Master Plan Near-Term Projects Environmental Assessment is published.
The Central Puget Sound region is expected to grow by another one million people by 2035. The Sustainable Airport Master Plan is the blueprint for changes at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to meet future demand.
In addition to considering forecasted passenger and cargo demand, the master plan takes stock of current facilities, infrastructure and operations—looking at scenarios five, 10 and 20 years in the future. It includes air quality, energy and water conservation, recycling and other strategic environmental goals, and will align with the Port’s sustainability and energy efficiency goals.
Previously, a proposal in the plan recommended a surface parking lot in a southernly portion of North SeaTac Park. On Aug. 25, 2021, the FAA released the good news that a project in North SeaTac Park is removed from the plan after ongoing environmental review.
The Port and FAA are working together to update the schedule for the Sustainable Airport Master Plan Near-Term Projects Environmental Assessment and will provide information regarding the release of the draft once it is available.
Upon completion of the NEPA environmental review, the State Environmental Policy Act environmental review will follow. After SEPA is complete, Commission authorization will be required to initiate construction work on the projects.
