CITY OF DES MOINES: Changes To 2021 Business License Renewal Process

City of Des Moines issued the following announcement on Dec. 22.

On July 1, 2020 the City implemented a new online business license and B&O tax filing program called FileLocal. With this transition renewal letters were not automatically sent out. Please see directions below on how to renew.  Renewals start 12/26/2020.

ON-LINE RENEWAL & FILING – www.filelocal-wa.gov

**You will need to obtain a Unified Business Identifier (UBI) number if you don’t already have one to register on FileLocal**

  1. FileLocal requires a 16-digit UBI#. If you do not know your full 16-digit number or need to register your business with the State click on this link https://secure.dor.wa.gov to look up your full UBI go to Business Lookup Enter ONLY your 9-digit UBI# and click Search. You should now see the additional 7-digits (3-digit Business ID# and 4-digit Location ID#).
  2. Log on to filelocal-wa.gov using your user name and password or Create Business Account located at the bottom of the filelocal-wa-gov home screen.
  3. If your Des Moines license is not already linked, link your Des Moines account using your Des Moines license number provided on your prior business license. 
  4. Renew and pay your Des Moines Business License for 2021, starting December 26, 2020. Renewal rates are $75.00 for businesses located in the City of Des Moines, except for rentals and $100.00 for businesses located in another city, but entering Des Moines to engage in business. The City has updated the renewal amounts for rental properties. Effective January 1, 2021, the renewal amounts will be based on the number of units rented. The fee for 1 to 10 units is $100.00; 11 to 30 units is $200.00; 31 to 99 units is $350.00; and 100 or more units is $500.00.
  5. Business License renewals are due no later than January 31, 2021.
File and pay your Des Moines B&O tax return using FileLocal.  Fourth (4th) Quarter 2020 B&O tax returns are due January 31, 2021, if postmarked after this date the appropriate interest and late penalties for B&O tax returns will be assessed. Annual 2020 B&O tax returns are due April 15, 2021 if postmarked after this date the appropriate interest and late penalties for B&O tax returns will be assessed.
