CITY OF MERCER ISLAND: Healthy Youth Initiative Raises Awareness About Safe Prescription Disposal

Medicines

City of Mercer Island issued the following announcement on April 23.

While Mercer Island residents are following the Governor's “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” protocols, it is more important than ever to properly store and safely dispose of prescription medications. Unused and expired prescription medications pose a public safety concern and the misuse of prescription medications can have serious medical consequences. To protect the health and safety of our community, the City of Mercer Island participates in two annual Med Take-Back Day events.

The events have historically been held in-person at City Hall, but the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has canceled this weekend’s nationwide events scheduled for April 25 due to the current coronavirus epidemic. In light of this cancellation, the Healthy Youth Initiative of the City's Youth and Family Services Department is providing residents with alternative ways to participate in Med Take Back Day without leaving the house.

All residents can request to have a mail-back envelope sent to their home to dispose of unwanted medications. Each envelope is 8 by 11 inches and holds up to 8 ounces of unwanted medicines. Simply place the unwanted medications in the pre-paid envelope and place it directly in your mailbox. There is no cost to residents to use this service. To request your envelope visit this Med Take Back webpage

To further ensure the safety of our youth, the Healthy Youth Initiative is also providing a lockbox to any Mercer Island resident at no cost during the month of April. Each lockbox is hard sided and measures 7 x 5 x 5 inches. To request a lockbox, please Email rachel.montgomery@mercergov.org and it will be mailed to your residence. In these challenging times, every Mercer Island resident can be active in preventing prescription misuse and protecting the youth in our community.
