The Renton Police Department wishes everyone a safe and Happy New Year!
We always want our community to be safe and make responsible choices, but New Year’s Eve poses an increased incentive to put all our cares away – even if it is just for one night. And while we understand the premise behind this viewpoint (because trust me, we share similar feelings), we look forward to seeing you all happy and healthy in 2023!
BE ALERT: Be aware of your surroundings and how others are behaving around you. Keep your distance from those who appear to be acting in a way that might cause harm for you and your loved ones. Remaining vigilant and taking preventive measures early is key. If someone appears to be highly intoxicated, do what you can to prevent them from driving or leaving with somebody they do not know. It’s important to keep an eye out for each other!
STICK TOGETHER: Remember to look out for each other. Going to parties or entertainment venues could mean a fast-paced and hectic evening so be sure to travel in pairs/groups – ALWAYS. Do not leave your drinks unattended and be vigilant when it comes to your travels to and from the different locations you may be visiting on New Year’s Eve. Maintaining a safety net around you in this type of environment is very important.
DESIGNATE A DRIVER: If you are going to be driving New Year’s Eve, DO NOT DRINK. It’s easy to convince yourself that “one drink won’t impact me” – but much tougher to put into practice if you start to feel left out or bored. Research what kind of non-alcoholic drinks you like and focus on enjoying the end of 2022 and celebrate the possibilities of 2023!
MONITOR YOUR SUBSTANCE INTAKE: Many will be drinking and/or partaking in mind altering substances on New Year’s Eve. Be sure to pay attention to how much you and others are consuming. Imbibing too much can have lethal consequences – which is sometimes difficult to recognize once you start to become under the influence. Make plans ahead of time for alternative transportation or the option to stay the night at your party location if the need arises.
