City of Mercer Island issued the following announcement on June 23.
Today, Governor Inslee announced a statewide mandate requiring facial coverings in public to slow the spread of the coronavirus. The order takes effect on Friday, June 26, and comes after King County in May issued its own public health directive strongly urging face coverings in many public settings.
The Governor’s new order legally requires people over the age of 5 to wear face coverings while at any indoor public setting, such as a grocery store, pharmacy, hardware store, health clinic, and other locations.
It also requires face coverings outside in public spaces where it is not possible to keep six feet apart from other people at all times.
The order allows some exceptions, such as when driving alone, eating at a restaurant, or engaged in a recreational activity either alone or with members of the same household.
