Rep. Adam Smith, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Washington’s 9th district, has expressed concerns about recent legislative developments through a series of tweets on July 10, 2025.

In his first tweet, Rep. Smith criticized the “Big Ugly Bill,” stating that it would significantly reduce access to healthcare across the United States. He proposed a solution: “To counteract this, we need to scrap the cap and allow more revenue to come in to Medicare, while supporting health care for all Americans.”

Later that day, he reflected on his own experiences with food assistance programs during childhood. Smith warned that under the same bill, essential safety net programs could be jeopardized: “Under the Big Ugly Bill, safety net programs for health care, food aid, and more won’t be there to help the American people when they need it most.” He emphasized the importance of strengthening these programs.

On Chronic Disease Awareness Day, Smith acknowledged those affected by chronic illnesses and their caregivers. In his words: “Today is Chronic Disease Awareness Day, a time to recognize the millions of Americans living with long-term health conditions.”

Rep. Adam Smith has been a member of Congress since 1997 after succeeding Randy Tate. Born in Washington D.C., he holds degrees from Fordham University and the University of Washington.
