Rep. Adam Smith, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Washington’s 9th district, recently addressed issues of gun violence, youth involvement in government, and concerns related to government actions on social media.

On April 17, 2025, Smith expressed his condolences to the Florida State University community and called for action from Congress to prevent mass shootings. He posted, “My heart goes out to the Florida State University campus and all those in Tallahassee. No one should fear going to school and absolutely no one should be killed at the hands of gun violence. We need everyone in Congress, Republicans too, to come together and stop mass shootings”.

The following day, on April 18, 2025, he announced the opening of applications for the next Youth Advisory Council. This initiative invites high school and college students in his district to engage with his office and discuss pressing national issues. He shared, “Applications for next year’s Youth Advisory Council are now open! All current high school and college students in the district are welcome to apply with a chance to interact with my office and pressing issues in our country. For more information, visit”.

In a separate post on the same day, Smith criticized the U.S. government for allegedly bypassing due process. Referring to an individual named Kilmar Abrego Garcia, he stated, “Everybody, regardless of how you feel about border security or immigration or crime, should be against the United States government effectively disappearing individuals like Kilmar Abrego Garcia without due process. This is exactly what a dictatorship looks like.”

Smith has been representing Washington’s 9th District since 1997, after serving in the Washington State Senate from 1991. Born in Washington, D.C., the 57-year-old congressman holds degrees from Fordham University and the University of Washington.
