WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.) today issued the following statement regarding the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down affirmative action, heavily restricting how universities can consider race in admissions decisions.
“I am very disappointed in today’s ruling from the Supreme Court. The decision wrongly ignores the impacts of racism on our society today and abandons the very purpose of the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause to end racial inequality in America. For decades, affirmative action has opened doors for people of color to pursue opportunities they have historically been denied. We, as a country, have benefited from our college campuses being more diverse and representative of our nation as a result. This ruling will deepen inequities in our education system for Black and Latino students and has devastating implications for the work to close equity gaps we see in workforce, wealth, and other outcomes. In light of this decision, the impetus is on Congress to pass investments in our education system to uplift underserved and disadvantaged communities so that we can achieve more equitable outcomes for our future generations.”
