On April 27, 2025, Representative Adam Smith, serving Washington’s 9th district in the U.S. Congress since 1997, expressed his views and legislative priorities through a series of tweets. These comments touched on environmental policy, mental health care initiatives, and workforce benefits.

Smith commemorated Arbor Day by addressing environmental concerns, stating, “Happy Arbor Day, Washington. Our world has been shattered by President Trump’s disastrous climate policies, so we need to recognize the importance of trees and their role in saving our planet.” The tweet was posted on April 27, 2025, at 03:04:00 UTC.

Later, at 15:05:00 UTC, Smith reflected on his efforts to enhance mental health services by introducing significant legislation. He noted, “Two years ago today, I introduced the Behavioral Health Crisis Care Centers Act, which would provide critical stabilization services to those experiencing mental or behavioral health crises. By having the resources to support these individuals, we can set them up for short- and—” This act aims to stabilize resources for those in mental or behavioral health crises.

In his third tweet of the day, posted at 23:05:00 UTC, Smith highlighted the need for robust family leave policies. He shared, “Only 21 percent of the workforce has access to paid family leave through their employer, making many have to return to their jobs prematurely. I have been a longtime supporter of the FAMILY Act, which provides all workers with up to 12 weeks of paid medical and family leave.” The FAMILY Act is aimed at providing comprehensive leave benefits to all workers.

Smith, born in Washington D.C. in 1965 and currently residing in Bellevue, has been a notable force in Congress, succeeding Randy Tate in 1997 after serving in the Washington State Senate. He holds a BA from Fordham University and a JD from the University of Washington.
