Rep. Adam Smith, U.S. Congressman representing Washington’s 9th district since 1997, raised concerns on social media about recent developments related to crime and federal intervention in U.S. cities.
On August 11, Smith posted: “Who knows what cities are next? https://t.co/Y4kVOm7pVb”. The following day, he commented on the debate surrounding crime in major urban centers and the possible role of federal authorities: “Regardless of how you feel about crime in Washington, D.C. or any other city, there are ways to address it without involving the Department of Defense — that is a huge step towards an autocratic government. https://t.co/MCNQ3u9Yls” (August 12).
Later that same day, Smith continued his commentary by highlighting specific aspects of current news from the nation’s capital: “This is the most troubling part of the D.C. news: https://t.co/EIMLOBkawE” (August 12).
Smith has represented Washington’s 9th District since replacing Randy Tate in Congress in 1997 and previously served in the Washington State Senate from 1991 to 1997. He was born in Washington, D.C., in 1965 and currently resides in Bellevue. Smith earned a BA from Fordham University and a JD from the University of Washington.
