Rep. Adam Smith, who has represented Washington’s 9th district in the U.S. Congress since 1997, shared several messages on social media as the new year began, addressing his constituents and commenting on health care issues.
On January 1, Smith posted a message reflecting on his service and extending well wishes to residents: “It’s been my privilege to serve the Ninth District of Washington throughout the year. Hope you ring in the new year with loved ones and stay safe this evening.” (January 1, 2026).
Later that day, he reiterated his commitment for the coming year: “Happy New Year, WA-09! I’ll continue to work each day of 2026 to make our community stronger, safer, and more affordable.” (January 1, 2026).
On January 2, Smith addressed changes affecting health care for Washingtonians at the start of 2026. He wrote: “Today marks the first day of the new year, but many Washingtonians are spending 2026 navigating new health care choices and more expensive health care.
Donald Trump and Republicans refused to extend critical Affordable Care Act tax credits, causing health care premiums to double” (January 2, 2026).
Smith is currently serving as a member of Congress from Washington’s 9th district after replacing Randy Tate in 1997. He previously served in the Washington State Senate from 1991 until joining Congress. Born in Washington D.C. in 1965 and now residing in Bellevue at age 57, Smith holds degrees from Fordham University (BA) and the University of Washington (JD).
