Rep. Adam Smith, U.S. Congressman representing Washington’s 9th district since 1997, addressed several national and international issues in a series of tweets posted on January 6, 2026.
In his first tweet marking the anniversary of the Capitol riot, Smith stated, “Five years ago, a mob of extremists attacked the United States Capitol in an attempt to derail our nation’s democracy. The insurrection of January 6 serves as a stark reminder of the importance of the peaceful transfer of power and the principles which American governance is https://t.co/JCmLATUape” (January 6, 2026).
Later that day, Smith discussed U.S. foreign policy regarding Venezuela in two separate interviews. In one tweet he said, “I spoke with @MSNOWNews about the Trump administration’s regime change efforts in Venezuela. https://t.co/Qjx1D5aq9K” (January 6, 2026). He followed this by stating, “I joined @NewsNation to discuss President Trump’s actions in Venezuela. https://t.co/UFQ3noVObD” (January 6, 2026).
Smith has been an active member of Congress for nearly three decades after replacing Randy Tate in Washington’s 9th district in 1997 and previously serving in the Washington State Senate from 1991 to 1997. Born in Washington, D.C., Smith is now based in Bellevue and holds degrees from Fordham University and the University of Washington.
