Rep. Adam Smith, U.S. Congressman representing Washington’s 9th district since 1997, used his social media platform on August 4, 2025, to recognize the work of the U.S. Coast Guard, address federal funding cuts affecting local Girl Scouts, and criticize economic policies under former President Trump.

In an early post that day, Smith marked the anniversary of the U.S. Coast Guard with a message of appreciation: “Happy 235th birthday @USCG. Thank you to the nearly 55,000 members who protect our country’s waterways, save lives in the wake of natural disasters, and work to maintain our national security.” (August 4, 2025)

Later that afternoon, he highlighted a visit from a local Girl Scouts troop at his Kent office and discussed ongoing efforts to support education initiatives: “Today, I welcomed @GirlScoutsWW to my Kent office. After being hit my federal funding cuts, I’m still working to help emphasize the importance of STEM and outdoor education, investing in early childhood education, and prioritizing workforce development. Thanks for coming by.” (August 4, 2025)

In a subsequent post that evening, Smith voiced opposition to economic measures enacted during Donald Trump’s presidency: “We must stand up to President Trump’s harmful economic policies, from his reckless tariffs to his continued immigration raids.” (August 4, 2025)

Smith has served in Congress since succeeding Randy Tate in 1997 and previously held office in the Washington State Senate from 1991 to 1997. Born in Washington D.C. in 1965 and now residing in Bellevue at age 57, Smith holds degrees from Fordham University (BA) and the University of Washington (JD).
