An hour later, Smith commented on recent economic trends: “Unemployment has reached a four year high, reaching 4.6% after 105,000 jobs were lost in October. The Trump administration’s on-again, off-again tariff strategy and inability to correct rising inflation is hurting Americans who are looking for jobs.” This post came as unemployment rates rose significantly across the country.
Later that afternoon at 17:49 UTC, Smith criticized Republican policies on health care: “Health care premiums are expected to rise by an average of 114% in just two weeks, all because the Republicans have no plan to address Affordable Care Act tax credits. Smith’s comments reflect ongoing debates in Congress over economic management and health care reform. He has represented Washington’s 9th District since succeeding Randy Tate in 1997 and previously served in the Washington State Senate from 1991 to 1997. Born in Washington, D.C., in 1965 and currently residing in Bellevue, Smith holds degrees from Fordham University (BA) and the University of Washington (JD).
