On May 3, 2025, Rep. Smith shared his experience speaking with individuals at Seattle University about the impact of the Trump administration over its first 100 days in office. He stated: “I had the chance to speak with folks at @seattleu yesterday about the impact the Trump administration has had over the past 100 days. Despite their threats against higher education, I am committed to working to support you and your students.”

Later that day, he emphasized the importance of press freedom in light of perceived challenges under the current presidency. On World Press Freedom Day, he remarked: “One of the principles that makes our country strong is the right to a free press. Though it may be under attack in this presidency, I see the value of speaking up and letting your voice be heard.”

On May 4, Rep. Smith commemorated an important historical event by speaking at Hoa Mai Park in Seattle for the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. Smith was born in Washington D.C., earned his BA from Fordham University in 1987, followed by a JD from University of Washington in 1990, and resides currently in Bellevue.
