Rep. Adam Smith, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Washington’s 9th district since 1997, has posted several statements on social media condemning remarks made by former President Donald Trump regarding the Somali community.

On December 10, 2025, Smith wrote: “President Trump continues to spew hateful, bigoted rhetoric about members of the Somali community. Trump’s comments only fuel the racism that persists in this country and demonize the hundreds of thousands of hardworking Somali immigrants that are part of our communities. I stand”.

Later that day, he reiterated his position with another statement: “There is nothing defensible about President Trump’s racist and bigoted remarks that target Somalis across the United States. Members of the Somali community live, work, and provide for my district, and I will continue to stand with them against President Trump’s attacks.”

On December 11, 2025, Smith published a brief post titled “On affordability.”

Smith has served as a U.S. Representative for Washington’s 9th District since replacing Randy Tate in 1997 and previously held office in the Washington State Senate from 1991 to 1997. Born in Washington, D.C., in 1965 and currently residing in Bellevue at age 57, Smith holds degrees from Fordham University (BA) and the University of Washington (JD).
