Rep. Adam Smith, who represents Washington’s 9th district in the U.S. Congress, criticized former President Donald Trump’s foreign and economic policies in a series of posts on September 5, 2025.

In one post, Smith questioned Trump’s reputation as an anti-war candidate: “Trump ran as the peace candidate?!! The guy who would end wars? What a joke. He wants a department of war, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza are worse than when he was elected and he’s after starting a war with Venezuela.” (posted September 5, 2025).

Smith continued his criticism by addressing Trump’s approach to international relations: “He’s picking economic fights with every country in the world, driving India into an alliance with Russia, China and NK, gutting US diplomacy and foreign aid and siding with Putin over our allies in Europe. The US is less safe and the world a more dangerous place because of Trump.” (posted September 5, 2025).

On economic matters, Smith highlighted concerns about job growth: “With so few jobs added in August, our country now faces the slowest job growth since 2020. Trump is weakening our economy.” (posted September 5, 2025).

Adam Smith has served as the representative for Washington’s 9th district since replacing Randy Tate in 1997. Before joining Congress, he was a member of the Washington State Senate from 1991 to 1997. Born in Washington D.C. in 1965 and currently residing in Bellevue at age 57, Smith holds degrees from Fordham University (BA) and the University of Washington (JD).
