Rep. Adam Smith, a U.S. Congressman representing Washington’s 9th district since 1997, has used his social media platform to voice opposition to recent federal policies and statements by political leaders.

On October 2, 2025, Smith stated, “Democrats are not going to rubber stamp Donald Trump’s federal budget.” On the same day, he addressed comments made by Speaker Johnson regarding health care: “Since Speaker Johnson continues to lie about health care to the American people, let me tell you the truth.”

The following day, October 3, Smith commented on energy policy changes under the Trump administration: “We need more clean energy, yet the Trump administration’s decision to cancel more than $7.5B in funding will have a devastating impact on the Pacific Northwest.

We cannot afford to walk away from investments that create good-paying jobs, lower energy costs, and move us toward”

Smith has represented Washington’s 9th District in Congress since replacing Randy Tate in 1997. Before his tenure in Congress, he served in the Washington State Senate from 1991 to 1997. Born in Washington, D.C., in 1965 and currently residing in Bellevue at age 57, Smith holds a BA from Fordham University and a JD from the University of Washington.
