His comments address actions taken by Secretary Rubio and former President Donald Trump concerning U.S. foreign assistance.
On February 3, 2025, Rep. Adam Smith tweeted about Secretary Rubio’s approach to USAID: “Secretary Rubio understands the importance of USAID, but is actively working to debilitate the agency because he does the bidding of Trump, Musk, and 19 year olds working at DOGE”.
Later that day, Smith posted another tweet expressing his views on Trump’s foreign policy: “My response to Trump’s illegal, dumb foreign policy to gut USAID:”.
In a subsequent tweet on the same day, Smith elaborated on Trump’s actions regarding U.S. foreign assistance: “Donald Trump has halted U.S. foreign assistance, but what exactly does that mean and why should you care? I’ve highlighted some specifics.”
