Rep. Adam Smith, U.S. Congressman representing Washington’s 9th district since 1997, recently addressed a range of issues in a series of social media posts, including youth advocacy on gun violence prevention, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and military desegregation efforts.

On July 24, Smith acknowledged young advocates from Georgetown for their work on gun violence prevention: “Thank you to Riley from Bellevue and her fellow Georgetown classmates for speaking with me about youth gun violence prevention today. Really appreciate your work as young advocates.”

The following day, Smith commented on the ongoing humanitarian situation in Gaza. He called for urgent action from Israel regarding aid delivery: “Israel must take immediate action and work with all possible humanitarian aid organizations to rush critically needed food and other supplies to the people in Gaza. The level of the crisis there demands emergency action. Israel’s new arrangement on delivering aid simply is not” (July 25).

On July 26, Smith reflected on military desegregation and current legislative efforts: “President Truman desegregated the Armed Forces in 1948, yet nearly 80 years later, we are facing efforts to roll back progress and limit brave servicemembers who are willing to risk their lives to protect our nation. That’s why I am proud to have introduced the Fit to Serve Act,”

Smith has been an active member of Congress since replacing Randy Tate in 1997 and previously served in the Washington State Senate from 1991 to 1997. Born in Washington, D.C., in 1965, he currently resides in Bellevue. Smith holds a BA from Fordham University (1987) and a JD from the University of Washington (1990).
