Rep. Adam Smith, who has represented Washington’s 9th district in the U.S. Congress since 1997, addressed several policy concerns and public awareness issues in recent posts on his official social media account.

On September 16, Smith emphasized the importance of civic participation, stating, “Every American has the right to exercise their voice in our democracy, and that starts at the ballot box. Today is National Voter Registration Day, so remember to register to vote and make a plan for when you visit the polls. The following day, Smith highlighted healthcare concerns related to federal tax credits. On September 17 he posted: “Folks from @WAplanfinder stopped by today to talk with me the impact that Congress not extending premium tax credits will have on Washingtonian’s health insurance. Tens of thousands of people will become uninsured and health care premiums will increase for everyone. I will https://t.co/LSPdgPxzYc”.

Later that day, Smith expressed concern over changes in vaccine guidance amid ongoing public health debates: “Over a million Americans lost their lives during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recklessly changing vaccine guidance with no evidence is radically dangerous and could put everyone’s health and wellbeing at stake. Secretary Kennedy needs to listen to the facts and the data provided from https://t.co/wPB6qDPoX1”.

Smith’s recent statements come as he continues his long tenure representing Washington’s 9th District in Congress—a role he has held since succeeding Randy Tate in 1997 (https://bioguide.congress.gov/search/bio/S000510). Before joining Congress, Smith served in the Washington State Senate from 1991 to 1997. Born in Washington, D.C., in 1965, Smith now resides in Bellevue and holds degrees from Fordham University (BA) and the University of Washington (JD).
