Rep. Adam Smith, who has represented Washington’s 9th District in the U.S. Congress since 1997, recently shared a series of statements on social media addressing key national and international issues. Smith, who succeeded Randy Tate and previously served in the Washington State Senate from 1991 to 1997, commented on U.S. support for Ukraine, domestic fiscal policy, and federal budget decisions.
On July 14, 2025, Smith emphasized the importance of U.S. support for Ukraine, stating “The United States of American needs to be very clear that we stand with Ukraine and are committed to putting them in the best position to defend themselves.”
Later that day, he addressed concerns about proposed tax cuts under what he referred to as the “Big Ugly Bill.” Smith warned that “if we cut all these taxes, we’re not going to be able to fund things like Medicaid and food assistance that benefits the bottom 60% of wage earners.”
On July 15, 2025, Smith criticized recent budget decisions made during the Trump administration. He asserted that “The budget decisions made during this Trump administration are putting us in an incredibly deep fiscal hole. They just passed a budget that will add $3.5 TRILLION to the debt.”
Smith was born in Washington, D.C., in 1965 and currently resides in Bellevue. He holds a BA from Fordham University (1987) and a JD from the University of Washington (1990).
