Rep. Adam Smith, U.S. Congressman representing Washington’s 9th district since 1997, addressed concerns about Social Security and education funding in a series of posts on August 14, 2025.

In his first post, Smith reflected on the history and current challenges facing Social Security: “90 years ago, Social Security was signed into law. Today, it’s under attack. President Trump is firing Social Security Administration employees, delaying services and making it more difficult for Americans to access their earned benefits, including over 112,000 people in https://t.co/0Ej0oP340B” (August 14, 2025).

Later that day, he emphasized the need for strategic action in response to these issues: “We need to fight back, but we need to fight smart. I joined @NewDEALLeaders to discuss this moment in our democracy and the work of the Democratic caucus.” (August 14, 2025).

Smith also highlighted local efforts in technology education: “Our district is a leading force in technological innovation, and that starts with investing in our youth. I met with two Bellevue School District Robotics teams today to discuss their priorities for STEM education in the region and the impacts of state and federal funding cuts.” (August 14, 2025).

Adam Smith has served as a member of Congress since replacing Randy Tate in Washington’s 9th District nearly three decades ago. He previously held office in the Washington State Senate from 1991 to 1997. Born in Washington D.C. in 1965 and currently residing in Bellevue, Smith holds degrees from Fordham University (BA) and the University of Washington (JD).
