Rep. Adam Smith, who represents Washington’s 9th district in the U.S. Congress, addressed the ongoing government shutdown and legislative negotiations in a series of posts on October 9, 2025.
In a message posted at 14:29 UTC, Smith criticized Republican lawmakers for their approach to negotiations, stating, “Republicans need to begin negotiations with Democrats instead of simply insisting we vote for legislation that’s in the worst interest for the American people. That is not a path forward.”
Later that day, at 16:17 UTC, Smith acknowledged the challenges faced by constituents during the shutdown and offered assistance from his office: “I understand that this government shutdown is a difficult time, but my office is here to help you. At 17:16 UTC, Smith referenced a recent town hall meeting and encouraged public engagement: “At my town hall earlier this week, Lizza asked about what more she can be doing. I talked with her about making a difference as a citizen.
Did you miss my town hall earlier this week? I’m hosting another one tonight: https://t.co/J4WEgT2BBQhttps://t.co/6ADoLxwej6“
