Rep. Adam Smith, U.S. Congressman representing Washington’s 9th district since 1997, has used his social media platform to address recent policy issues and political developments in a series of posts published on July 29 and July 30, 2025.

On July 29, Smith thanked a local advocacy group for their visit and expressed ongoing support for the LGBTQ+ community. He stated, “Thank you to @utopia_wa for coming by my district office today. As members of the LGBTQ+ community have come under attack from this administration, I will continue to work to support you through your challenges and appreciate what you’ve done for Pacific Islanders in Washington.”

The following day, Smith reflected on the anniversary of major health care legislation and called for continued funding of these programs. On July 30 he wrote, “In 1965, both parties came together to enact lifesaving health care policy by signing Medicaid and Medicare into law. 60 years later, only Democrats have remained committed to upholding their promise to keep Americans safe and healthy. We need funding for these programs to”

Later that same day, Smith criticized former President Donald Trump’s approach to governance with a direct statement: “President Trump’s governing philosophy is to lie. He’s lied about the Epstein files. He’s lied about cutting Medicaid. He’s lied about stopping the war in Ukraine on Day One. He’s lied about lowering inflation. This is not the way to run the United States of America.”

Smith has served as representative for Washington’s 9th District since replacing Randy Tate in Congress in 1997 and previously served in the Washington State Senate from 1991 until his election to Congress.
He was born in Washington D.C., graduated from Fordham University with a BA in 1987, earned a JD from the University of Washington in 1990, and currently resides in Bellevue.
