Rep. Adam Smith, U.S. Congressman representing Washington’s 9th district since 1997, posted a series of statements on his official X account addressing the anniversary of the October 7 attack on Israel, the treatment of federal employees, and the ongoing congressional shutdown.

On October 7, 2025, Smith marked the anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel, writing, “Today marks the two-year anniversary of the horrifying, brutal October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas. On this day, more than 1,200 men, women, and children were savagely killed, and more than 250 others were taken hostage, with at least 20 living hostages remaining in captivity. My”.

Later that evening, Smith discussed the impact of the government shutdown on federal employees. He recounted a conversation with a federal worker during a virtual town hall: “I spoke with Sandra, a federal employee who is working without pay, during last night’s Virtual Town Hall. The abuse that federal employees have taken from this administration is off the charts and it is weakening our country. President Trump and Republicans have been”.

On October 8, 2025, Smith criticized congressional leadership for halting negotiations during the shutdown: “In past shutdowns, Congress has been in session and voting. This time, Speaker Johnson has closed the House floor and stopped all negotiations. We should be negotiating right now.”

Smith has represented Washington’s 9th district since replacing Randy Tate in 1997 and previously served in the Washington State Senate from 1991 to 1997. Born in Washington, D.C., in 1965 and currently residing in Bellevue, Smith holds degrees from Fordham University and the University of Washington.
