Rep. Adam Smith, U.S. Congressman representing Washington’s 9th district since 1997, has addressed issues of extremism and recent violent incidents in a series of posts on social media.

On December 16, 2025, Smith criticized divisive rhetoric among his colleagues, writing, “This extreme language from my colleagues separates us at a time when we must strongly unite against hate and violence. Extremist violence knows no specific religion or ideology. We’ve seen horrific mass shootings from across the ideological and religious spectrum, from the Utoya”.

Later that day, Smith referenced recent tragedies in Australia and at Brown University during an interview with MSNBC. He posted, “Yesterday, I spoke to @MSNOW about the tragedies that took place in Bondi Beach, Australia and Brown University and what we must do to prevent future attacks.”

In another post on December 16, Smith discussed a maritime incident. He stated, “I joined @KING5Seattle to discuss what happened in the 40+ minutes between the first and second boat strikes on September 2.”

Smith has served as the representative for Washington’s 9th District since succeeding Randy Tate in 1997. Before his tenure in Congress, he was a member of the Washington State Senate from 1991 to 1997. Born in Washington, D.C., in 1965, Smith resides in Bellevue and holds degrees from Fordham University (BA) and the University of Washington (JD).
