Rep. Adam Smith, U.S. Congressman representing Washington’s 9th district since 1997, addressed issues of crime and economic policy in a series of recent posts on his social media account.
On August 23, Smith commented on public safety and political responses, stating, “Crime is a problem. Fascism isn’t the answer.” Later that day, he discussed rising prices and tariffs: “Prices went up 2.7% last month from the previous year, and consumers are forced to foot the bill. The government continues to collect tens of billions of dollars a month in tariffs from nations across the world, with the average tariff rate up to 18%. This is doing nothing to”
On August 25, Smith reiterated his stance on addressing crime more broadly: “We need to do more about crime, but only targeting Democratic-run cities is not the solution.”
Smith has represented Washington’s 9th district in Congress since replacing Randy Tate in 1997. Before his tenure in Congress, he served in the Washington State Senate from 1991 to 1997. Born in Washington, D.C., in 1965 and currently residing in Bellevue, Smith holds a BA from Fordham University (1987) and a JD from the University of Washington (1990).
