Rep. Adam Smith, who has represented Washington’s 9th district in the U.S. Congress since 1997, recently shared updates on social media regarding his engagement with constituents and labor leaders about current federal policies and their local impact.
On August 14, 2025, Smith wrote that he had returned to his district and expressed concern over constituent worries: “I’ve been back in my district and my constituents have never been so concerned about what’s happening in our country. Despite what this administration’s doing, I’m fighting so you can keep your Medicaid benefits, your Social Security money, and education grants.”
Later that day, Smith posted about a meeting with labor representatives at his Kent office: “I met with leaders of the Washington State Labor Council on Thursday at my Kent office to talk about the Trump Administration’s plans to cut Medicaid and its proposed pilot project in WA state to use AI for Medicaid preauthorization. I look forward to continuing to work with”.
In another post from August 14, Smith highlighted a discussion with SEIU 6: “SEIU 6 represents janitorial workers, airport employees, security officers, and event employees who deserve to have secure worksites and higher wages. We had a great conversation about their priorities and concerns for the future.”
Smith’s comments come amid ongoing debates over potential changes to Medicaid policy under the Trump Administration. The administration has proposed using artificial intelligence for Medicaid preauthorization as part of a pilot project in Washington state.
Adam Smith was born in Washington, D.C., in 1965 and currently resides in Bellevue. He earned his BA from Fordham University in 1987 and a JD from the University of Washington in 1990. Before joining Congress by replacing Randy Tate in 1997, he served as a member of the Washington State Senate from 1991 to 1997.
