Demolition of the Former Recreation Center will start next Week
0Comments

The demolition of the former recreation center is scheduled to begin  on Monday, June 6th. This building has served the community well for  over 65 years and has reached the end of its life span. Here is a  historical timeline for the buildings at City Hall Park:

  • 1950’s – The Highline School District constructed the current facilities in the 1950’s.
  • 1987 – The city reportedly purchased the property for $1 after the  Highline School District determined it no longer needed the facility.
  • 2014 – City Council formed the Facilities Planning Task Force.
  • 2015 – The final report of the Facilities Planning Task Force was presented to the council in November.
  • 2019 – The city contracted with a consultant to evaluate the safety  and feasibility of repairing the Recreation Center. After learning that  the critical and necessary repairs indicated in the report would  increase the building’s structural integrity to only approximately 60%  of current codes, the City Council determined building replacement was  the best option for the city.
  • 2020 – The city closed the recreation center due to Covid and the structural deficiencies found in the Recreation Center.
  • 2021 – The City Council approved a conceptual site plan for a new Civic Center at City Hall Park.
  • 2022 – Contract for the demolition of the former approved.

While it will be noisy, the contractor does not anticipate any  disruption to City Hall Park during the demolition work. If you want to  learn more about the plans for a new recreation center, join us at the  Town Hall meeting on Monday. More details about this event are listed  below.

On August 2nd, Normandy Park  residents will be asked to approve or reject a ballot measure that would  allow the city to issue a bond to help fund this project. Questions  that you can get answered – What facilities will be included in the  project? How much will it cost? How will it be funded? How will it  impact my taxes? What type of activities are you planning for the new  building? And other questions that are on your mind.

City staff will also be available to answer any other city-related  questions. We hope to see you on Monday, June 6th at 7:00 pm at The  Cove.
