The City of Covington recognizes two outstanding individuals each  year as its Citizen of the Year and Honorary Citizen of the Year. Over  the past several years, these honored

individuals have been volunteers,  advocates, ambassadors, dedicated residents and real assets of the City  of Covington. This year’s recipient of the Covington Citizen of the Year

Award is Debra Hartsock and the recipient of the Honorary Citizen of  the Year Award is Justin VanLandschoot.

After accepting nominations from the public, City Council considered  the slate of nominations at their June 14 city council meeting and  selected Debra and Justin as the honorees.

Debra was recognized for her contributions as a Covington resident  who cares deeply about her community.  She is always volunteering in the  community and serves in board

positions at the Covington Storehouse  Food Bank and the Kent Guild.

“I cannot say enough wonderful things about Debby,” said  councilmember Elizabeth Porter at the June 14 meeting. “She radiates  this genuine care.”

Debra also is an active member of the Covington Rotary Club and the  Covington Chamber of Commerce. Her efforts have had a positive impact on  the Covington community.

Justin was recognized for his contributions to the community as a  Covington property owner and manager. Justin supports the Covington  community by organizing clean-up

events, blood drives, and participating  in committees and organizations like the Clean, Safe, Welcome City  Committee that he spearheaded, the American Red Cross, the

Covington  Chamber of Commerce and more.

“His passion for Covington is extremely evident,” said councilmember Kristina Soltys when seconding his nomination on June 14.

Debby and Justin were recognized with proclamations from the city  council at the July 12 city council meeting. They will both be riding as  honored guests in the Covington Days

Festival Parade on Saturday, July  16 at 10 a.m.
