City Council approved an Interlocal Agreement with the Washington  State Department of Transportation for the reconstruction of a segment  of South 204th Street, to be included as part of the City’s future South  204th Street Transportation Improvement Project.

The extension of SR 509,  as part of the WSDOT Gateway Program, severs South 208th Street just  east of International Boulevard, which is also known as SR 99. To  maintain street connectivity, WSDOT will be connecting South 208th  Street via International Boulevard at South 206th Street

WSDOT will also construct a new segment of 34th Avenue South to  provide a north-south connection between South 204th Street and South  208th Street. WSDOT is required to provide improvements to South 208th  Street as well as improvements to South 204th Street, east of 32nd Place  South.

Improvements to South 204th Street are proposed to be constructed as  part of the city’s South 204th Street Improvement Project and WSDOT  would compensate the city upon completion. The City’s South 204th Street  Improvements Project is identified in the 2023-2028 Transportation Improvement Plan.

The project design is likely to begin in 2023 with construction targeted for 2025.

The city’s South 204th Street Improvement Project would include the required WSDOT improvements including:

  • Roadway section will be 28 feet and will include new pavement
  • The south side will have a curb and a 6-foot sidewalk
  • The  north side will have a curb and a linear bioretention facility, which  provides water quality treatment for stormwater runoff. This is part of  the City’s strong commitment to protecting and enhancing the environment
  • Landscaping and additional trees
  • Installation of street lighting on South 204th Street from 32nd Avenue South to 34th Avenue South

The total cost estimate for the project is currently a little over  $1.6 million.  The overall project costs have not yet been determined.
