Rep. Adam Smith, a U.S. Congressman representing Washington’s 9th district since 1997, has recently addressed several issues through his social media posts, ranging from concerns about executive actions to legislative initiatives and public health awareness.

On September 3, 2025, Smith raised alarms regarding presidential use of military force: “The president is using the U.S. military to pick people up off the streets without due process, and it’s a threat to the basic freedoms that we as members of a democracy face.”

Continuing his legislative work, on September 4, 2025, Smith highlighted new bipartisan efforts: “Earlier this month, I introduced the Expanding Service Coordinators Act with @RepBeatty and @RepBonamici. This legislation would increase funding and make reforms to strengthen our national workforce and connect residents of federally assisted housing with health care, nutrition,”.

Later that same day, he recognized National Food Safety Education Month by drawing attention to ongoing challenges in food assistance programs: “September is National Food Safety Education Month, where we recognize how to prevent foodborne illness. In a time where food assistance and nutrition education is being cut, it’s important to continue to learn about how to get healthy, safe food and follow simple food safety tips”.

Smith’s recent statements come amid broader debates over civil liberties and federal support for vulnerable populations. He has served in Congress since succeeding Randy Tate in 1997 after previously serving in the Washington State Senate from 1991 to 1997. Born in Washington D.C. in 1965 and currently residing in Bellevue at age 57, Smith holds degrees from Fordham University (BA) and the University of Washington (JD).
