Rep. Adam Smith, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Washington’s 9th district since 1997, addressed concerns over federal funding decisions and social programs in a series of posts on August 6, 2025.

In one post dated August 6, Smith commented on recent funding cuts: “Yesterday, Secretary Kennedy made the decision to cut funding from 22 projects, including those dedicated to developing vaccines using mRNA technology. This type of research has been critical in fighting viruses such as COVID-19 and the flu, and without it, the toll of the”.

Later that day, Smith highlighted his visit with a local organization in Seattle: “.@soundgen Meals on Wheels program has been delivering meals to seniors in our communities for many years. We discussed the need to preserve funding for these critical programs. I appreciate you all having me to your center in Seattle to share the important work you’re doing and”.

Smith also expressed concern about potential changes to federal benefits: “President Trump and the Republicans are trying to take away your Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.”

Smith has represented Washington’s 9th District since succeeding Randy Tate in 1997 and previously served in the Washington State Senate from 1991 to 1997. Born in Washington, D.C., he is currently a resident of Bellevue. Smith holds degrees from Fordham University (BA) and the University of Washington (JD).
