Rep. Adam Smith, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Washington’s 9th district, expressed concerns on social media about the suspension of crucial international programs that could impact thousands of lives. Born in Washington, D.C., and residing in Bellevue, Smith has been a congressional representative since 1997 and previously served in the Washington State Senate.

On February 3, 2025, Rep. Smith highlighted the cessation of demining programs in several countries by stating: “Demining programs in Mali, Sudan, and Cambodia have been stopped, so thousands of innocent bystanders could lose their lives if they step on a minefield.”

In another tweet posted shortly after on the same day, he noted the closure of health clinics: “Thousands of health clinics have been shut down, preventing medical shipments that could save lives.”

Furthermore, Rep. Smith pointed out potential risks from halted malaria prevention efforts: “6 million people will lose protection from malaria, as health programs terminate spraying operations across the world.”
