Rep. Adam Smith, a longstanding member of the U.S. Congress representing Washington’s 9th district since 1997, has voiced his opposition to what he refers to as the “Big Ugly Bill.” Through a series of tweets, Smith articulates his concerns regarding the legislation and its potential impact on the economy and public services.
On July 3, 2025, Rep. Adam Smith tweeted about his conversation with @MajorCBS concerning the controversial bill: “I spoke with @MajorCBS about the Big Ugly Bill and why it should not be passed.”
In another tweet posted on the same day, Smith criticized the financial implications of the bill: “50 Senators voted to pass a bill that would add over $3.3T to the national debt, which already totals over $36,000,000,000,000. President Trump is dragging us into an economic crisis if the Big Ugly Bill is passed. I will be voting NO.” This highlights his concern over escalating national debt levels.
Later in the day on July 3rd, Smith expressed further apprehensions regarding social services: “The Big Ugly Bill will cut Apple Health for hundreds of thousands of Washingtonians, while millions nationwide will lose access to health care and nutrition assistance. We cannot pass this horrible legislation.” His remarks reflect worries about reductions in healthcare and nutrition support.
Adam Smith was born in Washington D.C., holds degrees from Fordham University and University of Washington School of Law and resides in Bellevue.
