Rep. Adam Smith, who has represented Washington’s 9th district in the U.S. Congress since 1997, recently used his social media platform to highlight legislative developments and community achievements.
On December 11, 2025, Smith posted about a significant vote in the House of Representatives: “Today, I am proud to have voted for legislation that passed the House to restore federal workers’ union rights—rights that were illegally stripped away by the Trump Administration. A bipartisan coalition in Congress has come together to reaffirm collective bargaining and ensure”. The post referenced efforts by a bipartisan group in Congress to restore collective bargaining rights for federal workers.
The following day, December 12, Smith recognized local student achievement: “Congratulations to Gia Gupta, this year’s Congressional App Challenge winner! Gia submitted her app MirrorMe, which helps individuals who are at risk to struggle with mobility loss and emulates an at-home, AI-powered physical therapy session. Great work.” The annual Congressional App Challenge encourages students across districts to develop innovative software applications.
Later on December 12, Smith commented on climate policy and international agreements: “Ten years ago, the United States joined the Paris Climate Accord to help combat climate change and advance a clean energy future. Since then, President Trump has derailed this global effort by withdrawing our country from the agreement and labeling climate change a ‘hoax.’ I”. His remarks referred to U.S. participation in the Paris Agreement beginning in 2015 and subsequent withdrawal under President Donald Trump.
Smith has served as a member of Congress since replacing Randy Tate in 1997. Before his tenure in Congress, he was a member of the Washington State Senate from 1991 until his election to federal office. Born in Washington D.C. in 1965 and currently residing in Bellevue at age 57, Smith is an alumnus of Fordham University (BA) and holds a JD from the University of Washington.
